Representation that matters

As both an educator and a parent, I understand the emotional, psychological, and academic challenges our children are experiencing. These are challenging times that require educational leaders with the knowledge and experience to make well-informed decisions that prioritize the well-being of ALL students.

My professional journey in public education began with a passion for teaching and a dedication to serving students of all backgrounds. I have an educational background that has equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed for educational leadership and oversight.

I hold a BA in Communication Studies, a Single-Subject English Education credential, a Master of Education with a focus in Digital Learning and Literacy, and a Master of Arts in Communication with a focus in Organizational Leadership.

Throughout my 15+ years working in the public education system, I was an English teacher, Journalism Adviser, English Language Development (ELD) Coordinator, and Student Activities Advisor, working in Gilroy, San Jose, and Morgan Hill schools.

I have been recognized by Gilroy Unified School District as their Teacher of the Year in 2009, San Jose Unified School District’s Teacher of the Year in 2015, and the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce 2021 Educator of the Year.

Currently, I am a Communication Studies Instructor at Gavilan College, where I teach Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Argument and Debate.

I am committed to championing policies and initiatives that prioritize equity, inclusivity, and academic excellence for all students. I believe in fostering a supportive and empowering environment for educators, advocating for resources that meet the diverse needs of our students, and promoting transparency and accountability in the decision-making processes.

Veena Bhatia. Class of 2011, Gilroy High School

Between my educators at Gilroy High School, De Anza Community College, UC Berkeley, and UC College of the Law San Francisco, Ms. Andrade has been one of the most memorable, down-to-earth, and real teachers I’ve met. Ms. Andrade was a fearless advocate for her students’ overall academic and career success—regardless of the class subject.

Neal Dinsmore, Class of 2010, Gilroy High School

“Veronica Andrade exemplifies a passionate, caring, and supportive role model. I’ve had the privilege of knowing her as a teacher and as a good friend and there is not a better example of someone who has a desire to learn and help others live fulfilling lives.”

Orion Woods, Class of 2020, Sobrato High School

Mrs. Andrade was a teacher who pushed students to work to the best of their abilities and challenge us. Mrs. Andrade would be a great board member because she understands students. She has been able to educate students at all levels through her passion and dedication.

Calafia Briceno, Class of 2019, Central High School

“Mrs. Andrade has gone above and beyond for her students. Her passion for teaching has helped students like myself reach goals we never thought we could achieve. Our community is lucky to have a leader like her."

Jake Skeen, Class of 2016, Pioneer High School

Perhaps the best adjective to describe Mrs. Andrade is “world-class”. A decade has passed since I was her student & it’s abundantly clear that her impact is life-long. She fosters an environment of confidence & empathy. Through her strength, compassion, & intelligence, she is the definition of a role model.

Carly Campbell, Class of 2014, Pioneer High School

“Ms. Andrade was incredibly caring and promoted inclusivity. The things she taught us were invaluable to our success in the world. She would make a great leader and allocate funds to the things that matter.”

Andrew “Toasty” Toste, Class of 2012, Gilroy High School

"The mold was broken when the education system opened its doors to Veronica Andrade. Someone who saw the ceiling her peers were underneath and absolutely shattered it. She is the kind of educator that MHUSD should be clamoring for, someone who can build a foundation for those students looking to her for structure and guidance."

On the Issues

“In a country that prides itself on the mantra that “We The People” are treated fair and just, providing every child with an equitable education should not be controversial.”

Addressing instructional equity, culturally responsive teaching, and building relationships are necessary to solve disparities in academic performance between groups of students.”

-John Monteleone, Fellow, National Institute for Latino School Leaders, NCLR

Literacy: To address the emerging literacy crisis, it's crucial to bring back phonics education; reading is a learned skill, not an innate ability.

Supporting Our Educators: Our teachers are the foundation of our schools. I'll advocate increased professional development opportunities and practical tools to enhance best practices.

Mental Health: Our kids are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety, necessitating increased mental health education and support to ensure academic and personal success.

Fiscal Responsibility: The expiration of temporary COVID funds has led to financial challenges, impacting nationwide budgets. We must focus on sustainable funding solutions to ensure quality education for all students.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: I believe education must be culturally relevant, respecting students’ experiences and community, valuing their stories and skill sets, and connecting them to resources, thus empowering them in the academic world.
